My only memory of going to horse races was when I was in elementary school. I was always an animal lover so I hated what they did to the horses, but I loved all the festivities included when attending. I would tell my parents which horse to bet on, eat some deep fried snack, and sit with the other kids on top of the railing and watch the horses go by.
At the end of the race, I inevitably cried over not winning because I was then and always will be a bad sport.
So today.. in honor of the Kentucky Derby I decided to take a break from tilling my stubborn soil and make a batch of mint juleps.
Mint Juleps are a popular drink at the Kentucky Derby and in the south. I got my recipe from allrecipes.com . What's nice about this website is that it can calculate portions of ingredients depending on how many servings you would like to make. I made two servings and it was perfect... The recipe for 2 servings is as follows:
1. 1/2 cup water
2. 1/2 cup granulated sugar
3. 2 tablespoons of roughly chopped up mint
4. And some good ol' Kentucky bourbon
You bring the water, sugar, and mint to a boil making sure all the sugar is dissolved. Let the syrup cool for an hour and then strain out the mint. Pour it over some crushed ice, add 4oz of bourbon (more or less depending on your liver's liking) and some mint leaves for garnish. The syrup is pretty sweet so I diluted it with some water. Cheers! :)
